Entry from: Nikko, Japan Entry Title: "Shinkansen to a Ryokan" Entry: "A good traveller has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving - Lao Tzu Faster than a speeding bullet? Not quite So after 4 nights in Tokyo we used the first day of our 7-day Japan Rail Pass (a bargain of a pass only available outside Japan that gives unlimited access to all lines of the Japan Railway system for a specified period) to head north to a little town (little by Japanese standards but still large by our standards) called Nikko. It was good to get out of the city, although the suburbs of Tokyo seemed to go on forever, even traveling at over 280km per hour. Which brings me on nicely to the major thrill for me of our first trip out of Tokyo - the trip on the Shinkansen, better known to you and me as the bullet train (so-called for the smooth, rounded design of the earliest trains). A trip on the bullet train is an eagerly anticipated part of any trip to the country. It was certainly something I was looking forward to well before I got here. Boys will be boys. It's hard to believe that it was 1964 when the first bullet trains hit the tracks in Japan, just in time for the 1964 Olympics held in Tokyo. 1964! Hey, I don't wanna be dissing home but we in Ireland, a supposed first World country and the present economic envy of ...

YAMATO 大和Japanese battleship - part 1 Video Clips. Duration : 0.27 Mins.
Yamato, named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province, was the lead ship of the Yamato class of battleships that served with the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. She and her sister ship, Musashi, "were the largest and most powerful battleships ever built",[8] displacing 72800 tonnes at full load and armed with nine 46 cm (18.1 inch) main guns. Neither survived the war. Laid down in 1937 and formally commissioned in late 1941, Yamato was designed to counter the numerically superior battleship fleet of the United States, Japan's main rival in the Pacific. Throughout 1942 she served as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet, and in June 1942 Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto directed the fleet from her bridge during the disastrous Battle of Midway. Musashi took over as the Combined Fleet flagship in early 1943, and Yamato spent the rest of the year, and much of 1944, moving between the major Japanese naval bases of Truk and Kure in response to American threats. Although she was present at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, Yamato played no part in the battle. The only time she fired her main guns at enemy surface targets was in October 1944, when she was sent to engage American forces invading the Philippines during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On the verge of success the Japanese force turned back, believing they were engaging an entire US carrier fleet rather than the light escort carrier group that was all that stood between Yamato and the vulnerable ...

"Weekend in Kyoto" Trekkergold's photos around Kyoto, Japan (village kyoto review) Tube. Duration : 2.50 Mins.

Entry from: Kyoto, Japan Entry Title: "Weekend in Kyoto" Entry: "I read somewhere that Kyoto is one of the top three cultural cities in the world that must be visited (the other two being Paris and New York). Of course, many will disagree with this assessment (indeed, I might even!). Still, it is high on the list of places to visit. I am looking forward to this trip -- also to hang out with HK who I have seen precious little of during my time here (it is weird to be staying in the same apartment with someone but only really seeing them for an hour a day -- I came to Japan to see my friends as much as to see Japan itself, so...well, it'll be good to hang out). We woke up relatively early. It was great that HK was able to take the day off to hang out over an extended weekend. He is probably just as needing of a break as I am, I guess -- but it was a very nice gesture. We had decided to go to Kyoto, and HK had booked two hotels near central Kyoto. We took the bullet train down (no need for reservation, took a the train within 20 minutes of arriving at a cost of 12 700 Yen). We picked up a sandwich box beforehand from a spot that HK visits habitually for train trips. The sandwiches are from a higher end store in Shibuya district (close to where we had lunch). They were pretty good -- and I am getting ...
